What is performance management?

Employee commitment, understanding and efficiency are essential if an organization is to meet its rapidly changing needs in a timely and timely manner to a relevant standard. Performance management identifies the work that individuals need to do to be effective and contribute to the mission and objectives of the organization. “ A systematic process for improving individual , team and organizational performance “ ( Armstrong ,2014 p. 331) . This process should also encourage measure and evaluate job performance. So, then improvements can be made for the relevant personnel. And it seeks to communicate improve and reward performance. Performance management is a series of activities designed to ensure that the organization gets the performance it needs from employees. “The continuous process of improving performance by setting individual teams and goals which are aligned to the strategic goals of the organization, planning performance to achieve the goals, reviewing progress, and developing the knowledge, skills and abilities of the people.’ (Armstrong, 2017 p. 331). According to Armstrong this is a continues evaluation or an on-going process. “An ongoing continues process of communicating and clarifying job responsibilities, priorities, performance, expectations and development planning that optimize and individuals’ performance and aligns with organizational strategic goals.” (KU Human resource management). Also, according to Mahato,  Kumar and  Kesari,  (2020) performance management is “ongoing process of communication between a superior and an employee that occurs throughout the year, in support of accomplishing the strategic objectives of the organization. The communication process includes clarifying expectations, setting objectives, identifying goals, providing feedback, and reviewing results.

 

ABC Industrial Laboratories Ltd is an analytical testing laboratory and their entire customer satisfaction depends on the accuracy of test results and how efficiently and fast they provide test reports to their clients. So, performance management plays a vital role here. Understanding the goals of the company, employee individual role to accomplish the goal, understanding on the relevant chemistry of the test methods and their contribution   to submit the test reports on time to clients can be monitored by performance management and can improve employee performance by a strong performance management procedure.  Because this includes activities which ensure that goals are consistently being met in an effective and efficient manner.

  1. Performance management is an important aspect in HRM. It is used to create a work environment where people are motivated to provide their best performance and do quality work.

    In the existing business scenario, the role of Performance Management in HRM is very huge and important. The Performance Management compiles all the functions such as Goal Setting, regular performance review in accordance with the set goals, set instant communication amongst the team member for coaching, providing performance feedback and its report for creating better employee training and development programs, and finally connect performance with reward and recognition.
